The J Geils Band kicked things off with its usual lively-to-the-nth-degree set, 45 minutes of bluesy rock ("Hard Drivin' Man," "Give it to Me," Magic Dick's harmonica showcase "Whammer Jammer") mixed with pop hits ("Centerfold," "Love Stinks.") Frontman Peter Wolf remains a marvel. Let's hope that's not the case, because Saturday night he sent 17,565 happy fans home humming a song or three from his brilliant career. Seger has hinted that this might be his last-ever tour and album. Best of all was the Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute "Hey Gypsy," a blues shuffle in the SRV mold: Again, McNelley was immense. "California Stars," with lyrics by Woody Guthrie and music by Wilco and Billy Bragg, featured glorious harmonies. Steve Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand" and John Hiatt's "Detroit Made," a love song about the Buick Elektra 225, were upbeat treats. Tunes from the new album fit in remarkably well with the hits. The encores were sublime: "Against the Wind" and "Hollywood Nights," then "Night Moves" and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets." Alto Reed, with Seger since 1972, reprised the tune's memorable sax break. ![]() Seger played piano during the seductive "We've Got Tonight," during which couples sneaked kisses and cuddles, and the classic "Turn the Page," which might be the greatest all-time song about a musician's life on the road. "Like a Rock" featured a sterling slide guitar solo by Rob McNelley this guy can play. The show featured a ridiculous number of highlights. During the quieter numbers, Seger was seated on a stool at center stage but for much of the night he was on his feet moving about. He was on stage for the entire two-hour show, which ended at 11:15 p.m., well after the Garden's curfew. Like most of us, Seger's hair is white, his belly more than ample and he wears glasses: "Come to Grandpoppa" might have been more appropriate "Come to Poppa" was a funky, soulful toe-tapper. Clearly Seger, and his fans, aren't over the hill. The iconic "Old Time Rock and Roll," which has become a staple at wedding receptions, became a thunderous sing-along. "The Fire Down Below," with its lyric of "the blue blood streets of Boston," drew cheers. ![]() No problem: the crowd loudly and proudly sang along. Occasionally, the band overpowered Seger's vocals. Seger's voice has lost a little of its gruffness and power, but it's still sweet and assured. He started with "Roll Me Away" and the Memphis nugget "Tryin' to Live My Life Without You," a funky, soulful gem that featured four horn players and three back-up vocalists, including the legendary Shaun Murphy. Rock and rollers never forget, but it is easy to overlook the fact that Seger has written an incredible number of hits - 21 top-40 songs - most of which he performed Saturday night. Even better: Boston's fast and furious J. Seger is touring behind his excellent new album, "Ride Out," his 17th, and he's brought along 14 musicians/singers to help preach the blue-collar gospel of Seger. There he is, up on the stage at TD Garden on Saturday night before a crazed full house of fans who are beyond ecstatic that the pride of Detroit has brought his high-octane rock 'n' roll show back to Boston. Here he is, Bob Seger, at age 69, on the road again.
